Just a quick post here. Saw the new Superman finally (I hate theatres), had some quick thoughts.
- Corenswet was a solid Supes. I think he can do a solid Clark, but we didn't get enough of him, which was a drag. I think the best executions of Superman highlight this duality so we can really feel it. I needed a bit more Clark, essentially.
- I hate the suit. The biggest issue I had was how it fit and the material. There are scenes where it literally looked like he had T-Rex arms. The first that comes to mind is when he's fighting the Kaiju and he does the whole "eyes up here" bit. It was absurd looking. The main issue though, other than the aforementioned visual problems, is that you can see that he has very little range of motion, when it's not all CGI. No character whose whole schtick is "Hey look how hard I can punch" would have a uniform that restricted the movement of his face punchers.
- Lex was perfect. While I can enjoy a more nuanced greyer version of Lex, like we saw in Smallville, it was refreshing to have a Lex that was just a murderous piece of shit. In many ways we need this version of Lex to properly be the nemesis of Superman. He is the distorted mirror of Supes. Brilliant, but weak. Rich but ineffective. Takes life with no remorse or second thoughts. He's perfectly human and perfectly monstrous.
- Mr. Terrific lived up to his name. I agree with the interwebs, Mr. Terrific was a breakout. The portrayal was fantastic, and did the character (whom I happen to love) justice. The mix of strategic thinking, athleticism, and pure intelligence was exactly what you wanted from that character.
- Hawkgirl feel flat for me. I haven't formed an opinion of the portrayal of Hawkgirl yet. If this is the Saunders version, then meh. If this is the Shiera (Thanagarian) version then I hate it with the passion of a thousand burning suns.
- Green Lantern. I mean it's Nathan Fillion. It was practically perfect in every way. No notes.
The rest of the cast was kind of just there for me including Lois. No real impact on me, or not enough to be memorable, which is unfortunate since some of them are extremely important. With all that said, I enjoyed this MUCH more than Man of Steel, even though I think Cavill could have been an amazing Supes/Kent if he had been given the chance.
I am hopeful for the future of the DCU with this being the jumping off point. I'm excited to see what comes next.
